Northland teens that are sophomores, juniors or seniors are invited to participate in a prevention leadership institute to be held Nov. 12-14 at Camp Wilderness, 34030 W. 204th St., Lawson, Mo.
The Northland Teen Institute, which is sponsored by Tri-County Mental Health Services, Inc., will focus on overall leadership training with a special focus on substance abuse and violence prevention training.
Since 1993, students from Clay, Platte and Ray county high schools have had the opportunity to meet other teen leaders throughout the area and learn how to address the issues of substance abuse and violence prevention in their schools and community.
NTI is based on the concept that peer-to-peer communication is the most successful with youth. The institute provides participants the necessary tools to help them design and implement messages and programs seen as the most effective ways to impact their peers in their school and community.
The educational event will combine hands-on training with interaction in small and large group settings as well as individual reflection and professional presentations.
Participants will be selected through an application process. To be considered for selection, students must meet the following criteria: Demonstrate leadership skills, be respected by peers and members of the community, be willing to work to prevent substance abuse among teens in their school and community, have above average grades, have parental consent and support to attend, and be able to stay for the duration of the camp.
The $100 fee for the institute includes room and board, food and materials. Fees must be paid prior to the date of the event. Partial scholarships may be available. To acquire an application, or for further information, contact Youth Prevention Coordinator Ryan McElhaney at (816) 877-0496 or via e-mail at ryanm@tri-countymhs.org. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 9.
