A key service for Northland older adults will continue, thanks in part to grants recently awarded by Clay and Ray counties as well as a renewal grant from the health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.
Now in its fourth year, the work continues the effective help to local older adults who suffer illnesses such as depression through a broad range of community programs, including work with existing community caregivers and organizations.
Originally funded by a Health Care Foundation grant, Tri-County’s widely praised Older Adult Services Program was recently expanded with grants from the Clay and Ray County Senior Funds. The additional grants ensure the efforts continue throughout the Northland, including outside of Kansas City North.
Tri-County’s Older Adult Services provides mental health care for older adults suffering from depression and other behavioral health problems, as well as support for their caregivers. Services include training sessions for medical workers, nursing home staff, church leaders and others along with direct contact with older adults for screening and referral services.
One of the program’s key priorities is increasing awareness about the connection between physical and mental health. The services provide education regarding how untreated, late life depression is correlated with an increased fall risk, worsening of other chronic illness, and early nursing home placement. Along with direct work with older adults, education of caregivers on the role of mental wellness is stressed to ensure a holistic and effective approach.
